Te Tauihu Opportunity: Alimentary Systems August Hui
An Integrated Waste Treatment Plant is Zero Waste, Zero Emissions and Zero Liquid Discharge
On Wednesday, July 28, we began public discussions about locating an ITWP pilot in the Nelson Tasman region. The pilot will prove that we can address wastewater treatment vulnerability to climate impacts, diverting discharge from Tasman Bay towards a circular land-based solution and diverting wastewater sludge away from a landfill or land discharge.
We think this is urgent because, during July, heavy rainfall over the previous fortnight put extreme pressure on the Motueka Sewage Treatment ponds, forcing the Tasman Council to spill treated wastewater sewage into the adjacent wetland area. As the rain continued, it was discharged directly into the sea. This is not uncommon, according to the NZ Herald over 100 Wastewater Treatment plants breach consent.
Our second Hui continue the discussion with the community about our aim to undertake a pilot in Nelson, Marlborough or Tasman that prevents wastewater sludge from being discharged to land or sea. Please join us to ask questions.
A recording of the first Hui and transcript of the questions can be found here.
